Mia Flawless

Derby name: Mia Flawless
Number: 700
Position: Blocker & Pivot
Why did you start playing roller derby?
I saw the movie "Whip It" and found the sport interesting and challenging. I had never been into sports but somehow roller derby really got to me. Some time passed and I stumbled upon a Fresh Meat course event on Facebook, I had no idea that roller derby existed in Iceland until then! I signed up and dragged one of my best friends with me to practice (I didn't have the guts to go alone). At the time I had the flu and showed up to my first derby practice with a fever, I was so determined to go. I had never stood on roller skates before until then but it was so much fun, the spirit was great and I really wanted to get better at this. So here I am!
What are you up to when you're not playing derby?
I study tourism at the University of Iceland and work for Visit Reykjavik. I also love traveling, cooking vegetarian food and spending time with my baby sister.
What is the best thing about playing derby?
Challenging yourself and finding yourself being able to do the most amazing things no matter your size and shape.
What is your favourite Icelandic food or candy?
Þristur - Chocolate covered caramel liquorice! Recommended.
Words of wisdom: There is no sorry in derby! (They make us do burpees if we say the s-word during practice so it would be wise not to).
